Before You Grab That Screwdriver: What to Know About Servicing Your EV Charger

It’s easy to imagine that maintaining an electric vehicle (EV) charger is no big deal. After all, if you’ve ever rewired a lamp or swapped a wall outlet, maybe you think you’re ready to tackle something a bit bigger. But an EV charger is a different issue. It uses more electricity than anything else in your home. That means even minor errors pose real dangers.

There’s also a big gap between identifying a problem and fixing it. You may see that your charger is warm or that the charging session is interrupted. That’s useful information, but it doesn’t make the answer something you can take up on your own. A misstep could fry your charger or flip your circuit breaker. Worse, it could start a fire.

Opening the Charger Could Void the Warranty

Here is something that many homeowners don’t realize until it’s too late. If you tamper with the charger, you void your warranty. This includes activities, such as removing the housing, changing out a cord, or anything inside the box.

You will need the system serviced by an authorized technician. If you attempt to repair it yourself and something goes wrong later, even if it’s not related, you could be on the hook for a complete replacement.

You can still visually inspect the unit, look for cable damage, or listen for strange sounds while charging. But anything involving wires, terminals, or internal components is something best left to someone with training and experience.

It’s Not Just About the Charger

Remember, the charger is only half the battle. The charging process involves your breaker panel, wiring, and an outlet (for Level 1) or dedicated line (for Level 2). If you’re running into issues, you may not even have a problem with the charger. It might be something like a loose wire in the panel, a failing breaker, or heat damaged wiring in the wall.

To inspect those things safely, you need tools and knowledge most people don’t have. If you’re not comfortable with turning off the main breaker and removing the panel cover, and you don’t have the proper experience and diagnostic equipment, the problem can be hard to diagnose. And setting everything back up in the wrong place poses a danger to your home and family.

There’s a Safer Way to Stay Involved

You don’t have to be a master electrician to play a small part in the upkeep of your EV charger. Keep the area clean and dry. Watch for signs of wear. Write things down if something appears awry while the device is charging. Taking these small measures can have a big impact when you call in a pro. The more information you’re able to provide, the quicker the fix is made — and the more money you’ll save over the long run.
